The 'Balach'
Our Support for Learning Department took inspiration from the natural environment of Islay and Jura. Our cultural links with ‘uisge beatha’ is represented by Oor Wullie’s ‘barrel’, with peat and barley at his feet. Our relationship with the sea, for both fishing and safety, is shown by his boots and fishing net to fix his back pocket. His dungarees – covered in local wildlife – are held up by blue Islay tweed and twinned with a graffiti shirt of Islay and Jura place names. The ginger hues of his hair is the Viking link and the farming life gives Oor Wullie a brilliant tan. This sculpture is sponsored by Primero Contracts Limited, Dundee.
